If you have ever seen The Breakfast Club then you are aware of the group Simple Minds and their best known song, "Don't You Forget About Me", perhaps a Top 10 most iconic song of the 1980s. However, as is often the case with songs like that, when you really listen to the group's collection, you'll identify a song that is not only better but has more meaning. For me, that song is "Sanctify Yourself."
Everything abut this song resonates. It's got that 80s sound that doesn't turn me off with a great overall sound. The lyrics are spiritual with a voice I have to admit I wish mine was like (if I could have a singing voice, I'd want mine to be like Jim Kerr or Michael Hutchence.)
When I look at the lyrics, especially the opening, I cannot help but feel they are written for today:
Is this the age of the thunder and rage
Can you feel the ground move 'round your feet?
If you take one step closer, it'll lead to another
The crossroad above is where we meet
I shout out for shelter, I need you for something
The whole world's out, they're all on the street
We live in a world that is ripping itself apart. Our nation is ripping itself apart. Our faith in everything is crumbling. It seems bleak and is only getting bleaker.
It doesn't have to be that way but we need to understand that what we control is very small. The only thing we can control is ourselves. So let's take Jim's suggestion and sanctify ourselves:
You can't stop the world for a boy or a girl Sweet victims of poor circumstances But you can pour back the love, sweeping down from above Giving hope and making more chances Well, I hope and I pray that maybe someday You'll come back down here and show me the way
Control yourself, love is all you need Control yourself, open up your heart Sanctify yourself, sanctify (sanctify) Sanctify yourself, sanctify (sanctify) Sanctify yourself, sanctify (sanctify) Sanctify yourself, set yourself free (sanctify)
No matter what you believe in, be the change you want to see. If enough of us do that then perhaps we can change the world. Sanctify yourself!
