I remember trying to get my parents to listen to the music I liked when I was a teenager. While it was a hopeless cause with my dad and stepmother, I had some success with my mother and stepfather. Of course, they would resort to a lot of their music, especially 70's rock, which positively influenced me. However, I also recall stating very openly that I didn't want to be bogged down in listening to just the music I grew up with. I was determined to evolve with musical changes.

Naturally, now that I am a parent, I got bogged down at times, stuck listening to the music of my youth. Lately, I have been creating new Spotify playlists based on decades. As I write this, my 1990s playlist has nearly 200 songs, and my 1980s playlist is over 100. The 1970s plus 2000s, 2010s, and 2020s total less than 50.

So I opened my mind and started paying attention to my kids' music. And that is how I came across "Heat Waves" by Glass Animals. While the song's primary meaning is about breakups and getting over them, for me, the song is about opening back up to new music after I shut myself off from it for years (outside of techno.)

"Heat Waves" is the song that reopened the gates for modern music to enter my heart.
